Rutgers reported that about 35% of the sampled Norway rats carried Vkorc1 mutations, but the functional impact remains unclear for most of them.[3][4] That is an important limit. A mutation is not the same thing as proven field resistance. Earlier work on this gene also warned that laboratory enzyme tests could not confirm warfarin resistance for every mutant protein.[1] That leaves room for doubt, especially in rats.

The study points to a real resistance problem in some urban mice, while also admitting that newly found mutations may or may not matter.[1][3] A separate surveillance study found no evidence of Vkorc1 resistance mutations in Norway rats from Richmond, Virginia, or Helsinki, Finland, which shows the problem is not uniform across cities or countries.[3] Geography still matters.
What City Pest Control Means Now
The practical lesson is simple: chemical control alone can fail when rodents adapt. Rutgers researchers urged integrated pest management, which means sanitation, habitat changes, sealing entry points, and traps, not just more poison.[3] That advice fits common sense. If a building keeps feeding rodents and giving them cover, the best bait in the world will still fight a losing battle. The smart move is to make the environment harder to live in before reaching for stronger chemicals.
