The niacin discovery is not a one-off. Scientists at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute recently explained why the thymus, an organ central to the body’s immune defenses, shrinks and weakens as people age, a world-first finding in the study of aging. Other Australian researchers identified how a protein called PINK1 attaches to damaged cells in a discovery tied to Parkinson’s disease, opening a path toward new drugs.

Australian scientists have also uncovered a link between antibiotic use and the later development of asthma, a step toward a simple way to prevent the condition before it starts. And an international team led by Australian and British researchers mapped the genes that control bone formation and loss at a scale never done before, work that could lead to treatments for people who lose bone density with age.

Australia’s health department describes a long chain between a lab discovery and a treatment patients can actually use. That process, called research translation, moves a finding from early lab work through testing, safety checks, and real-world trials before it becomes standard care.
